Kingwood Recent Power Outage

Monday afternoon brought severe weather to North East Houston and the Kingwood area. The power went out at our office at just after 4pm and did not come on at my house until after 10pm.

The severe weather brought down trees, tree limbs, brought very heavy rain and even a house fire caused by lightning. That is typical of the capabilities of the storms we get and being prepared for them is very important.

Part of being prepared is knowing who to call for help with your home and any damages that you may have received. We hope that we can either help you or find a resource that can help you.

Now, back to the power outage.

After Hurricane Ike we have seriously considered a standby generator for our home. Enduring a 10 day power outage is tough even on the experienced campers. The cost of a standby generator and installation makes it a major purchase in the range of $5000 to $20000 depending on the capacity you desire. Best solution but, a serious commitment.

We do have a portable and affordable (usually $150 to $600 range) generator now and can pull that out for the medium term power outages. You just never know how long the power will be out so you may have been in the same position as myself, do I take the generator out, inspect it, gas it up, connect the extension cords, etc. and suddenly the power comes on and my work was unnecessary?

For these unexpected power outages, we have found a better solution. Portable power packs sold by Duracell that can power a lamp, charge a cell phone, run small appliances, etc. These are perfect for the short term outages. They even come with built in radios and jumper cables...yes, you can even start your car with them. We used one to power one or our small LCD televisions so that we could watch the 6:00 news and again at 10pm while keeping out cell phones charged. At around $120 each, Perfect!

I have shared a link to them on Amazon and hope that you seriously consider getting one or two of these. They are cost effective and extremely handy to have.

Thank you for reading and remember that All-Tex Exteriors is here to help.
