Houston Wind Storm

Severe weather caused by front coming in
Were you awakened last night by the howling wind?

If your roof is more than 5 years old, it is possible that the wind has blown some shingles back, lifting and curling them allowing water to penetrate underneath. This causes problems and decay over time. Water driven up under the shingles does not dry out properly and will start to grow mold and mildew.

As a result, your 20 or 30 year roof was just down graded by the storm to a 10 or 15 year roof. Mold and mildew begins a decay process that breaks down the shingles and works on the paper under the layer of shingles. Roof failure resulting in leaks and further damage, including attic and even interior damage, is likely to occur.

Get your roof inspected now to ensure there are still years of life left in it. If we find there are minor repairs needed, we'll estimate the repairs at no cost to you. Visit our website for more information and to schedule your appointment.

Houston Snow!

How about all that Houston area SNOW!
Brrrrr - That cold front was really nice and refreshing but, I'll bet it sure gave your home's heater a work out. And if you have old windows (single pane, builder grade), a lot of that heat just escaped into the atmosphere. Let's call a spade a spade. Leaky windows are "Money Leaks"!

New Replacement Windows are built better in many ways:
  • Better Frames - Vinyl or Thermally Broken Aluminum
  • Double Pane Glass
  • Huge Air Gap of 3/4 inch or 7/8 inch!
  • Argon Gas between the panes
  • Low E Glass coatings - prevents heat exchange "pass thru"

All of these features work together to help you keep the heat inside your house where you can enjoy it.

The National Fenestration Ratings Council (NFRC) gives windows a rating for thermal retention. It is what is known as the U Factor rating. Energy Star windows have a pretty flexible rating for U Factor and it is scaled like this:
  • Northern Climate: .35 or less
  • North Central Climate: .40 or less
  • South Central Climate: .40 or less
  • Southern Climate "Texas": .75 - .60 or less

But, is "Energy Star" certified enough? Not really...

Here in Texas, you would be hard pressed to find windows with the U Factor in the recommended range of .60 to .75 because most windows available are better that that. In fact, in order to get a Federal Energy Credit anywhere in the US, the windows must meet .30 or lower! That is lower (better) rating than what they recommend in North Dakota and Minnesota!

I can tell you this for sure; Energy is not getting any cheaper. So I am happy that the Federal Rebate program requirements are so stringent. I am also happy to say that All-Tex Exteriors has plenty of options available so that you can not only meet the requirements for the rebate but, to ensure the comfort and safety of your family as well!

How about having us out for a consultation...we don't charge for that! We hope to see you soon!

Why does Paint Stay on Hardiplank longer than on wood? Houston Austin

Paint lasts longer on Hardie
Wood products respond to the high humidity in our area by a constant process of expanding and shrinking. As the moisture content in our air (and boy do we get humidity!) increases, wood expands. When the air dries out, wood contracts or shrinks.

Since paint is applied over the wood, paint has to expand/stretch and shrink with the wood. Thankfully, latex has some elasticity to it but, over time, paint will eventually lose it's grip on the wood surface.

Applying wood to your home is like buying something that you know requires more maintenance! You will have to take care of this "high maintenance" product often - every 3 to 5 years!

James Hardie Hardiplank Siding on the other hand, is not susceptible to the same cycle of expansion and contraction! With much less movement in the hardie siding as a result of reactions to humidity, paint lasts a real long time on hardie! Two, three and FOUR times longer. So instead of painting every 3-5 years, paint on hardie will last 10 years or more!

  • Hardie lasts longer than wood
  • Does not rot
  • Does not get termites
  • Has factory applied primer
  • Looks like wood
  • Does not shrink and expand with our humidity
  • AND COSTS LESS THAN WOOD!

Clearly, replacing your wood siding and trim with Hardie Siding and Trim and then painting with two coats of a high quality paint like All-Tex Exteriors uses in Houston and Austin areas - Sherwin-Williams Superpaint, is a much better solution!

Get rid of the wood and solve the problem once and for all! Call All-Tex Exteriors for all your hardiplank and exterior painting needs in the Houston and Austin areas.

Hardiplank Siding Austin, TX

It's time to get rid of the rotten wood on your house!

The hot, humid climate here in Texas contributes to and accelerates the decay of our homes. Wood siding, put on by the builder 15 years and more ago, has been getting dry rot and termites. Contributing to the fast decay is siding that has not been kept painted and caulked. If you replace wood with wood, you are not fixing the problem!

Vinyl? Aluminum? Fiber Cement?
There are several different choices out there and all are better than replacing wood with wood. Here are a few reasons NOT to choose vinyl or aluminum:

  • Vinyl is very thin, tears easily and is not a significant insulator.
  • Vinyl is too lightweight and can just peel off the house in high winds.
  • Vinyl is difficult if not impossible to repaint.
  • Aluminum a poor insulator against heat gain. It is a heat conductor.
  • Aluminum dents from impact and difficult to repair.
  • Both are often placed right over the rotten bug infested wood! HIDING not SOLVING the problem!

It's time for a real solution!
Hardiplank siding by James Hardie Company is a real solution. Wood should be replaced with a product that does not change the look of the house much while solving all the problems of wood. Consider:

  • Hardie is a Fiber Cement product. Cellulose fibers, Silica, Cement.
  • Has deep rich cedar looking wood grain.
  • Rot and bug resistant.
  • Fire, impact and moisture resistant.
  • Is easily repaired.
  • Is easily repainted.

Do You Have a Thermal Leak?

Replacement Windows save you Energy but, How do you know when you have a Thermal Leak?

A thermal leak occurs when there are gaps around your windows and doors allowing heated or cooled air to escape. It can be difficult to detect and even more difficult to calculate or approximate the amount of energy loss is occurring.

This Thermal Leak detector from Black and Decker can truly pay for itself. Use it around the house to check for leaks at windows and doors...those are usually the biggest culprits. Other areas that typical homeowners and some professionals leave out are around light switches, wall outlets, HVAC registers and HVAC ducting in the attic.

At this affordable price, it is a must have!

Affordable Room Additions

Two Easy Solutions to a Common Problem

The Holidays are coming and that same problem will come up that comes up year after year. Where do you put all the extra people? This year it is 35 - 40 people for Thanksgiving or 25 people for Christmas Dinner, or MORE! You already use the dining room and the family room and the breakfast nook - family is spread out all over the house. With the economy and the housing crunch going on, maybe some of those relatives are staying beyond the holidays?

You could add a room to your home but, traditional construction takes months! The project is messy and takes quite a bit of effort and a very serious time commitment on your part. This would never be ready in time for the holidays this year plus, who wants to spend $100 Grand today anyway?

Well, you could get all the space you need at a fraction of the cost and at a fraction of the time commitment! You very well could have your room ready to decorate for Thanksgiving!

What I am talking about is avoiding the mess and fuss of traditional framed construction and getting your room addition back on budget and in the time frame you need it to be. By adding a Sun Room for example, you could have a new room on your home in less than 2 weeks build time! A Screen Room can be yours in a matter of days! With a sunroom, you are adding a bright and cheerful, temperature controlled room at less than one half of the cost of traditional framed construction. Complete with all the lighting and outlets you need to really use this space as if it is an integrated room that flows and fits in with your home's design and your lifestyle.

Here in Texas, maybe all you need is a screen room to add comfortable space that is usable 10 months out of the year. How many cold days are there in Houston? For Austin and San Antonio you'll still get more than 9 months of comfortable use out of a screen room.

Are you ready to find out how soon you'll be enjoying your new room? Call All-Tex Exteriors at 866-921-5715 or visit our website and request a FREE No Obligation Quote?

Kingwood Recent Power Outage

Monday afternoon brought severe weather to North East Houston and the Kingwood area. The power went out at our office at just after 4pm and did not come on at my house until after 10pm.

The severe weather brought down trees, tree limbs, brought very heavy rain and even a house fire caused by lightning. That is typical of the capabilities of the storms we get and being prepared for them is very important.

Part of being prepared is knowing who to call for help with your home and any damages that you may have received. We hope that we can either help you or find a resource that can help you.

Now, back to the power outage.

After Hurricane Ike we have seriously considered a standby generator for our home. Enduring a 10 day power outage is tough even on the experienced campers. The cost of a standby generator and installation makes it a major purchase in the range of $5000 to $20000 depending on the capacity you desire. Best solution but, a serious commitment.

We do have a portable and affordable (usually $150 to $600 range) generator now and can pull that out for the medium term power outages. You just never know how long the power will be out so you may have been in the same position as myself, do I take the generator out, inspect it, gas it up, connect the extension cords, etc. and suddenly the power comes on and my work was unnecessary?

For these unexpected power outages, we have found a better solution. Portable power packs sold by Duracell that can power a lamp, charge a cell phone, run small appliances, etc. These are perfect for the short term outages. They even come with built in radios and jumper cables...yes, you can even start your car with them. We used one to power one or our small LCD televisions so that we could watch the 6:00 news and again at 10pm while keeping out cell phones charged. At around $120 each, Perfect!

I have shared a link to them on Amazon and hope that you seriously consider getting one or two of these. They are cost effective and extremely handy to have.

Thank you for reading and remember that All-Tex Exteriors is here to help.

Pergola Leader in Texas

Hello Texans!

There are still a lot of hot sunny days ahead in the coming months. We know exactly what the problem is too. You'd like to enjoy your back yard more but, there is no shade to sit or entertain in!

Of course, you could grow a tree and in about 15 years or so, you'll have nature's best shade! (we encourage you to plant trees regardless)

However the quickest way to get backyard shade NOW is: Add a Pergola!

With a Pergola, you can have exactly the style and look you are after. Single or twin headers, single or twin rafters. Posts or dozens of column styles to choose from. You can even adjust the amount of shade you want by designing the space between the lattice slats...from 10% to 60% shade are common selections.

Our most popular pergolas are constructed of sturdy aluminum tubing that has a lifetime warranty. Baked on enamel finishes in several colors will ensure you get exactly the look you want in a NO Maintenance material. Never rot, No termites, no painting...no worries.

Call or visit All-Tex Exteriors now to get the ball rolling.

Houston Weather today

I think today has started out to be the most perfect day of weather all year in Houston, so far. It is currently in the upper 80's and I just finished a walk around Kingwood on our trail system. Everything is green and beautiful and the wildlife is loving it. All the birds and squirrels are out doing their busy work.

Now I am sitting in my backyard in cool, comfortable shade with the overhead fan on medium speed. It is just perfect. I am spending my afternoon doing some web research on new products and services while studying some new topics of interest. There is never an end to the vast array of topics available to read about. My cat is sitting with me. She is studying the concrete, apparently. Half the time she is just staring at the inside of her eyelids.

My next home project will definitely be to double the size of my patio cover. I am still working with just the one provided by the builder. Soon, I'll add new brick columns that will bring it out 15 more feet out and add another fan and speakers. Maybe even power and cable up in the ceiling so I can add an LCD TV. The extra room to entertain and stretch out will be nice.

What is your next project? Tell me about your dream patio!

Federal Energy Tax Credit

Energy-Efficiency Home and Vehicle Tax Credits

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) extends, expands, and simplifies the federal income tax credits for homeowners who make energy efficiency home improvements. The law extends the consumer tax benefits for another year, through 2010; triples the total available tax credit from $500 to $1,500; and increases the tax credit to 30 percent of the cost of each qualified energy efficiency improvement. The law also removes the cap on geothermal heat pumps and solar water heaters through 2016.

Energy Efficiency Can Lower Your Federal Tax Bill as Well as Your Energy Bills

Above is a direct quote from the "Alliance to Save Energy" www.ase.org/content/article/detail/2654

There are many excellent resources available on this topic. All-Tex Exteriors (Houston, Austin and San Antonio) can help you by providing the correct products and advice so that you can collect your tax credit. Here are the details of what products we can help you with.

Windows and Doors

Four Big Mistakes Home Owners Make When Repainting Their Home

Avoid These Common Home Owner Mistakes When Repainting Your Home!

  1. Trying to tackle this task yourself!

  2. Choosing inferior paint and preparation products.

  3. Improper and/or incomplete preparation.

  4. Choosing the wrong Contractor!

Most home owners should not try to tackle painting their own home. Exterior painting is a much bigger job than it appears from the ground. Qualified painters have long ladders and even scaffolding in some cases. Plus, renting all the sprayer, compressor, hoses and other equipment is a hassle that is not worth it.

Many home owners choose the wrong exterior paint or try to save money on cheap paint. Imaging having to do the job over again in a year (or less!) if the paint does not stick correctly or starts to peel, bubble and blister. Paint is available in many chemical and pigment combinations. All-Tex has, over many years of experience, chosen the best available paint on the market...Sherwin Williams Duration! In addition, the correct primer must be selected for the best adherence.

Due to the number of years of experience, All-Tex knows how important preparation is to a quality, long lasting paint job. There is a lot of elbow grease that goes in to scraping, sanding and prepping the surfaces. Imaging trying to prep a 3 story dormer with the wrong equipment. If you can't get up there eye level with the problem areas, there will be no way to prep it so it will protect the surface and keep moisture from getting into the nooks and crannies. Proper caulking with the right product is essential.

Often, home owners mistakenly select a painter on price alone. This is an important protective coating that will help prevent decay, moisture penetration and help retain the value of your property. A qualified contractor, like All-Tex, will have many years of experience, a great reputation in the market, references and a long warranty. You want the job done right the first time.

Call All-Tex or visit our website to arrange for a consultation!

Houston Replacement Windows with Tilt**

What does it mean when Replacement Windows have a Tilt in Feature?

Replacement Windows for your home in either Single Hung or Double Hung designs can have a tilt feature designed in to them. This feature is one of the best inventions ever when it comes to cleaning your windows.

Imagine cleaning your windows from the inside, while keeping the screens on! Even upstairs!!

Simply open the window up about a third of the way, flip the latches and tilt the top of the window towards you. If you have Single Hung windows you will be tilting just the lower sash in. This allows you enough of a reach to clean the top sash too but, you'll probably still have to remove the screen. On Double Hung tilt in windows, you can clean both window sashes without removing the screens!

Visit All-Tex Exteriors to see all your options for Replacement Windows in the Houston, Austin and San Antonio Areas.

Houston Energy Savings!

Conserve Energy - Save Money!

Hardie Siding

Hardie Siding on your Houston area home can save you money! Your home may be leaking energy. Air that you paid dearly to cool could be escaping right out through the walls.

  • Tearing off old siding will reveal the problems so we can fix them.

  • New vapor barrier, like Tyvek or GreenGuard, with new James Hardie Siding can seal those leaks.

  • HardiSoffit panels with venting help your attic breathe! They help your roof ridge vents work more efficiently.

  • New HardiTrim around your windows and doors will help seal the leaks too!

Cool your house, Not the Neighborhood! Seal up those Leaks!

Replacement Windows and Doors

Old inefficient windows and doors were poorly designed and are costing you about 25% of your energy bill! Single pane glass and aluminum frames with no thermal break are very poor insulators!
Dual Pane Replacement Windows have several benefits:
  • New Windows have 2 panes of Double Strength Glass to insulate your home.

  • Low-E coatings help prevent over 75% of the solar heat gain.

  • Vinyl Frames or Aluminum Frames with a thermal break prevent heat transfer

  • Dual pane windows with Argon Gas help keep heat in during the winter.

When your home's leaks are properly sealed, you spend less money heating and cooling your home. Even your air conditioner will last longer providing even more Return on Your Investment.

When All-Tex does the job for you, you know that your satisfaction is our number one priority. Visit our website to request an appointment before the cooling season gets underway.

Hardie Siding is Your Best Value!

Year after year, Hardie Siding comes out on top as the #1 best Return on Investment for your home.

It beats out kitchens, baths and an upstairs room addition!

Consider this from James Hardie's website:

"There are many other projects you can tackle, but only residing with fiber cement gives you the best return on your investment 4 years in a row.

  • Residing with fiber cement gives a 31% better return than adding a bathroom and costs $61k less to complete

  • Minor kitchen remodel gives you a 10% less return on investment than residing with fiber cement

  • Adding a second story addition nets you 23% less return on investment than fiber cement residing

Remodeling magazine is the industry's leading home improvement magazine. Since 1988, Remodeling magazine's Cost vs. Value Report has compared construction costs for common remodeling projects with the value they add to a home at resale in the current real estate market. The results— upscale siding projects using fiber-cement return the highest value at resale."

Nobody knows more about Hardie Siding in the Houston, Austin and San Antonio Residing Market than All-Tex Exteriors.

Vinyl and Wood Siding are Flame Broiled! Hardie - Unscathed!

If you are considering replacing your siding on your home, You need to watch this video.

  • Vinyl Siding is extremely unsafe in a fire. It immediately melts away exposing the studs to the flames. Your entire home will be engulfed in flames in just minutes.

  • Wood catches fire and the fire spreads easily.

Is Hardie Siding a "Green Building" product?

This question has come up several times. What Hardie Siding is made up of is clearly publicly researched and well known. There are a lot of resources and links on our web site at All-Tex Exteriors that provide a good start for your research.

Below is a video with several interviews on how the longevity of James Hardie Siding, meaning how long it lasts, helps to promote less waste and uses less resources over the life of the home. Siding your home once (or once and for all) reduces waste and the use of energy and other resources. Please view the video linked below.

Where do I find product details on Hardiplank?

We have compiled a great volume of resources on Hardiplank. Our All-Tex Exteriors Siding page is a great place to start.

There you will find more information on the excellent durability of the product line, information about using All-Tex to perform the installation (in our Replacement Siding service area), links to the James Hardie website and links to videos about installation, storage and more.

Visit All-Tex Exteriors and our Hardie Siding page for more information.

Why is Hardie Siding so popular in the south?

Why is Hardie Siding touted as the best residential siding material in the South?

There several reasons for that.

Houston and other areas of our southern region have high humidity and a lot of rainfall. That leads to wood getting water saturated and eventually to dry rot. Wood wicks up and retains moisture which leads to mold and mildew that eventually rot the wood. A material is needed that resists and does not soak up water.

Another reason is that bugs (termites, etc.) love our hot humid climate. Termites thrive here and your home's wood siding is a delicious source of food for them. You need siding that termites do not consider a main course.

One more reason is that our climate is pretty harsh on finished products (paint) no matter what surface it is applied to. If the paint gets worn off and the wood gets wet then you are exposed to wood rot and termites. You need to keep your home's protective paint coat on your house.

Since James Hardie Siding products are made of a combination of fiber and cement, they are much more water resistant then wood. It does not have a porous surface for water to soak into. Since there is very little food source in the fiber cement siding (Hardie), the termites leave it alone. Then, Hardie is designed to hold paint better than wood. The binder in paint can help hold the base and the pigment in paint to the surface of Hardie up to twice as long as wood.

All-Tex will re-side your home with top quality moisture and bug resistant James Hardie Siding then coat it with 2 thick coats of Sherwin-Williams paint. Your home will look fantastic and be protected for many years.

New Construction vs. Replacement Windows

We get this question a lot: What is the difference between "new construction" and "replacement" windows?

The most common difference is what is called a "nail fin" or the flange around a "new construction window" that allows you to attach the window directly to the wall studs. If you already have a home that you live in or is already built you will want Replacement Windows.

Why? Because your home may already have the vapor barrier and siding installed or the brick walls up. In this case, you don't want and don't need the nail fin. Replacement windows are tilted into position and then screwed into the window framing studs from the inside of the home. Then, everything is caulked and trimmed out.

So, the next question is: Why can't I just go down to the [home improvement] store and buy the windows and put them in myself?

The short answer is: You might be able to. The problems start when you get to the store and see a whole bunch of sizes and you'll quickly notice most of them have nail fins. Most of the stock windows are for the new construction industry. You may be able to put in a window that is close in size but, you are opening yourself up to quite a bit of extra work shimming and trimming it out. Not to mention that windows are not really something you want to tackle on a first attempt. It takes quite a few window installations to really get good at it.

All-Tex always places a special order for the exact size replacement window required in the opening. Our installers have many years and thousands of installations under their belt. Plus, you get expert help with all the ratings, styles, options, etc.
